The Trail - The Calizz Walkthrough

Calizz is a village in spirit, a doorway to the Goa that existed before 1961. Life moved at a relaxed pace back then, and each day unfolded like a gentle song. Old Goan life blended the East and the West, lived with grace, community, and rich cultural warmth. Mornings began with the musical call of the pader, his cycle bell echoing through sleepy lanes as children scampered behind him for fresh, warm pão. Afternoons changed with the rhythm of the fields, coconut groves, and the sea. When the amori sounded, the village fell into a peaceful quiet, doors closed, conversations faded, and homes welcomed the cool shade of siesta. Courtyards were the center of every home. Festivals were celebrated as one big family, and susegado was not just an idea, it was a way of life. Cars were few, cycles were many and the people of Goa found immense joy in this beautifully simple way of life.

Calizz gathers these memories and preserves them so that the Goa of yesterday can be felt, experienced, and lived today.

Your journey begins at the Portuguese Courtyard, a symbolic bridge between Portuguese legacy and Goan soul. Traditional courtyards were open to the sky, allowing light and breeze to wash into Goan homes. At Calizz, three cherished symbols reside in this space: the Pot of Thought, a vessel honouring Goan poets and writers they were the keepers of love, language, and legacy; the Bell of Resounding Love, an antique bell crafted in 1713, the second-oldest church bell in Goa and the Three Fountains of Caryatids, inspired by Sir Richard Wallace’s 19th-century French fountains, sculpted figures symbolizing generosity, hope, and nourishment. At Calizz, these figures carry a deeper meaning, forming an installation dedicated to the harmony between Goa’s Hindu and Catholic communities. Representing Space, Time, and Energy, the three dimensions essential for life, they mirror both Hinduism’s Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, embodying creation, preservation, and transformation, and Catholicism’s Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit united in love. Together, they celebrate unity, brotherhood, and the shared heritage that defines Goa.

Further along the trail stands the Throne of Love, a fanciful and unforgettable spot where visitors may stop and take a moment. From here, the path leads to one of Calizz’s most treasured installations: the Land Art of Goa. This evocative artwork narrates the origin story of the land, Parashurama’s arrow giving birth to Goa, kingdoms rising and fading through the ages, Portuguese influence leaving an imprint across centuries, Goa eventually claiming her freedom, and Goans carrying their traditions forward with grace and resilience. It honours the ancestral tools that shaped the everyday life of the people like the rogdo, dante, and tovli, and the culinary rituals carried forward largely by the women of Goa. This land art is a tribute to them, the keepers of culture.

The trail then opens into a breathtaking space sheltered by a 250-year-old Banyan tree, its vast canopy tinting the sky a gentle green and creating the serene Banyan Courtyard, a place for reflection, quiet awe, and connection with nature. As you walk further, mud-tiled roofs, verandas, and architectural details inspired by traditional Goan homes begin to appear, revealing Calizz as a lovingly crafted homage to an old Goan village. Along these pathways, the walls are adorned with extraordinary two-tonne sculpted mud faces, each carrying its own story, symbolism, and meaning, while the walls across the space are painted white, a colour historically reserved for royals, chief officers, and churches, strictly forbidden for common use and long regarded as a symbol of privilege and prestige. Among its treasures stands a 250-year-old mud house beside a sacred Tulsi plant, revered in Hindu homes for purity, protection, and divine presence, where lighting an oil lamp was once a cherished evening ritual believed to bring warmth and spiritual clarity.

Every tree at Calizz is chosen with deliberate care, from banyans and bhel to other traditional Goan species, each planted to produce high levels of oxygen even through the night, fostering calm minds, balanced bodies, and a profound sense of natural wellbeing. Such thoughtfulness in the air you breathe reflects the same meticulous attention we bring to every detail of your experience here. The trail gracefully unfolds into the Gothic Garden, our open mud-crafted dining space, where arches and shadows weave a story of elegance and at the side stands a statue of Abbé Faria, the son of the soil, whose birthplace we proudly share. At Calizz, luxury is never loud; it is subtle, refined, and deeply thoughtful. It resides in the care for every story, the reverence for heritage, the attention to minute details, and the gentle comforts that anticipate your needs before you even ask. Here, in every corner, in every gesture, Calizz invites you to pause, to feel, and to immerse yourself in a sanctuary of heritage, heart, and the art of truly considered hospitality.
